what brought you to korea? why korea?
ah well, i've always had an interest in learning languages, and so i thought i don't know a lot about korean like korean culture and korean language. so i just came over here without much planning and i stayed for 5 years.

i did. i lived in japan for 3 years. and for some reason, all my friends in japan were korean. yeah, either exchange students or there's a lot of koreans that live in japan are. for some reason, they're all koreans.

here's a thing. it's a daily life dialog. if you're a couple, marriage, when you're thinking about marriage, one person wants kids, the other person, i don't want kids. this could be a problem. a major problem.

■ on the rocks. 파탄 직전인 (망하거나 곤경에 처한) = ruined or in trouble
if a couple, if a relation is on the rocks, what does this mean? if a couple is on the rocks or a situation, can be on the rocks, it means that there's some major trouble. 
yeah, there's a problem. 
yeah, it could go very bad, kind of demolish very quickly.
disappear. 
think of a ship in an ocean that has landed on rocks. that's where, i believe, the expression comes from. but if a ship is on rocks, it's not in a good situation. 
it's going down.

■ a change of heart 심경의 변화 
    = a change in one's opinion or feelings about something
if you have a change of heart, now we can say 'oh, i change my mind'. 'a change of heart', is that any different? 
for some reason, a change of heart seems a little more emotional? usually we mean this in a good sense. so a person has kind of a bad emotion toward someone or a bad feeling, they change it to something good, something better.
oh, very good.

■ stick/put one's foot in one's mouth 실언을 하다
    = to unintententially say something foolish or hurtful
and if you stick or put one's foot in your mouth, so to... if you put your foot in your mouth, what are you doing? 
    so to say/speak 말하자면

i do this all the time. this means that you say something that is unintentionally hurtful. you don't mean to be rude, but you accidently say something that makes someone mad. 
it's kind of big oops.
    oops 아차, 이런
    hurtful (감정을) 상하게 하는
i didn't, i wouldn't mean it. you want to kind of like take back something that you said.
    take something back 취소하다, 철회하다

now, if something is on the rocks and for people who drink, those men out there or women, you like things on the rocks that just means you have the liquor and ice. wiskey on the rocks, vodka on the rocks. but this is a different 'on the rocks'. 

this 'on the rocks' means we're not doing well. so in the dialog, it says my relationship is on the rocks, if you want to get more specific, you could say my marriage is on the rocks.

yes. it means, ooh your marriage might end if you don't solve a problem.

so i think this expression, when we're talking about the level of seriousness, i think it's pretty high up there. when you say that your relationship or your marriage is on the rocks, it's very close, i think, to ending maybe.

yeah, i think it, something less severe is 'has problems', so 'my relationship has problems' means maybe you're fighting, but you're not worried about it, ending. 'on the rocks' is pretty close to ending.

so she's saying that, did you have a change of heart about getting married?' in the beginning you wanted to get married, did you have a change of heart? what does this means? 
ah so, a change of heart, here is one instance of using it negatively. i usually see it positive. but here it means, change of mind and maybe, woo i don't wanna get married.
    instance 사례, 경우

a change of heart means your emotions to the person is changed.
yeah, i think that's a very key point here because we can say 'change your mind'. 
yeah, i guess it could work. but really it is the heart. and heart is where all the emotions are.
    key (형) 중요한, 주요한
it's not a change based on maybe logic, it's more of a change based on your love for someone or your feelings for someone. 
so basically, heidi is saying, well like, you just don't love him anymore. 
basically that's what it is. 바로 그렇다. 바로 그거에요.

so if it's not for everyone, it means not all family have to have a big family.
and her advice is compromise. and just quickly what does this mean? 
compromise means to kind of make a solution that you can both be okay with. not 100%, but maybe 80%. 80%, you're happy. 
so you kind of meet in the middle.

so it's not necessarily, in this case, a relationship, but just in general. it's a dating situation.

on the rocks can used obviously for relationships. can you say your friendship is on the rocks? do we use it like that?

yeah, i heard that before. especially if your friend you're very close with and then maybe you have a big fight, that's when you would say it's on the rocks. for casual friendships, maybe not so oftenly used. 

i agree. i think it's usualy... that's why relationship and marriage, it's always used because there is that closeness. but just for like regular..., you know? 
it would probably have to be a close best friend. 

like you want to say my relationship with, how about your boss? 
you do see your boss everyday, but questionable, maybe it's a little awkward.

now if you have a change of heart, it means that you have, you change your opinion, but mostly like your feelings about something.
it's a decision change based on emotion, based on feeling.

okay. so what is this difference between changing your mind and having a change of heart for this invitation? 

so a change of your mind may be from the very beginning, do i go, do i not go, just confused. but a change of heart, maybe you don't really like going but later you remember something about the person. emotionally that makes you go.

i think that's so important, right. so i don't wanna go to this event, but she's my (a) good friend. i wanna support her. okay. there's a change of heart.

you wouldn't use a change of heart for maybe like what you want to eat for dinner. so if originally you want to eat chicken, you can change your mind to eat pizza, but you wouldn't have a change of heart to eat pizza, i don't think. 
but i love pizza. no, it's not that.

but for example originally you wanted to eat alone, but you have a change of heart and decide to call your mom and eat with your mom.

if you stick or put your foot in your mouth, 
this means you say something that usually you reglect, usually make someone mad and you can shorten it to say stick your foot in it. just stick your foot in it or stick your foot in your mouth.

yeah, so when some people say i always, like you said early, i always, you know, put my foot in my mouth, it's basically you say things that may be inappropriate or not very nice not because you're a bad person, but you just didn't realize.

right, and that often happens when you're learning a language, right. i know when i came to korea, i say things that may be you shouldn't say in korea. but are perfectly fine in the united states. 
alright. so it's a cultural thing too. 
it can be cultural.

i think sometimes when you have a personality that's very honest and direct, those type of people often...
