일간베스트저장소(일베) 회원들이 세월호 유가족 단식 농성장 앞에서 폭식으로 유가족들을 조롱한 비인간적이고 상식 이하의 행동에 대한 국민들의 분노가 들끓고 있는 가운데 이를 다룬 본지 뉴스프로의 영문기사가 토픽스 와이어를 비롯한 inagist.com, bloglvin.com, censorbugbear.org, veooz.com 등 온라인 주요뉴스를 소개하는 사이트들을 타고 전 세계에 집중적으로 전파되고 있다.

이들 온라인 와이어 뉴스 매체들은 9일 오전 CNN iReport에 올려진 본지 임옥 기자의 ‘S. Korean Conservative Extermis Mock Sewol Families’ Hunger Strike- 한국 보수극우단체, 세월호 가족의 단식투쟁을 조롱’이라는 제목의 기사를 일제히 주요뉴스로 소개했다. 이 기사는 CNN iReport에 올려진 지 채 10시간이 지나기 전에 3백여 명이 공유하는 등 iReport 자체에서도 큰 주목을 받았다.

임옥 기자는 이 기사에서 약 1백여 명의 일베 회원들이 세월호 희생자 유가족들이 독립적이고 철저한 조사를 위한 특별법 제정을 요구하며 단식농성을 벌이고 있는 텐트로 와 채 200미터도 떨어지지 않은 곳에서 많은 양의 후라이치킨과 피자를 포함한 음식들을 게걸스럽게 먹으며 유가족들과 그 지지자들을 조롱했다고 전했다.

이들의 행동은 그들의 바람과는 달리 구경하던 많은 사람들이 이들의 방식에 대해 분노했다고 전한 임옥 기자는 인간의 고통에 대해 비인륜적이고 비정하게 행동해서는 안될 것이라고 준엄하게 꾸짖었다. 일베의 인간이기를 포기한 이러한 폭식 조롱은 이제 국내 뿐만 아니라 국제적으로 지탄을 받을뿐 아니라 일베 스스로가 국제적인 조롱거리로 등급하게 됐다.

On September 6, 2014 about 100 members from a South Korean conservative extremist online group called ‘Ilbe’ came to Gwanghwamun Plaza where the families of the victims from the Sewol have been camping out demanding a special bill to be enacted for an independant and thorough investigation into the Sewol disaster. In the deadly sinking of the ferry Sewol over 300 passengers, mostly high school students from a working class neighborhood, were killed after being trapped inside of the capsized ship on April 16, 2014.

2014년 9월 6일 100명 가량의 한국 극우보수 온라인 단체인 ‘일베’회원들이 세월호 희생자 가족들이 세월호 참사에 대한 독립적이고 철저한 조사를 위해 특별법 제정을 요구하며 야영을 하고 있는 광화문 광장으로 왔다. 2014년 4월 16일 세월호 여객선의 치명적인 침몰사고로 대부분 노동자 계층이 사는 동네의 고등학교 학생들이던 300명 이상의 승객이 전복된 배에 갖혀 목숨을 잃었다.

The families and their supporters have been on a hunger strike demanding for an enactment of the special bill to establish a special investigation committee to investigate anybody and to indict anyone who is found responsible. The members of this conservative extremist group announced that they would have an event of “an excessive eating strike” to oppose the bereaved families’ wishes.

세월호 유족들과 이들의 지지자들은 특별한 조사위원회를 만들어 이 위원회에 누구라도 수사하고 책임 있는 사람들은 기소할 수 있는 권한을 부여하는 특별법 제정을 요구하며 단식투쟁을 벌였다. 이 극우보수단체의 회원들은 유족들의 바램을 반대하기 위해 자기들은 “폭식투쟁”을 벌이겠다고 발표했다.

Within less than 200 meters from the tent where the families of the victims were staying on the plaza this group of people sat and gorged on a large amount of food including fried chicken and pizza in order to ridicule the families and their supporters.

유가족들이 머무는 광장의 텐트에서 불과 200미터도 떨어지지 않은 곳에 이 사람들이 앉아 많은 양의 후라이치킨과 피자를 포함한 음식을 게걸스럽게 삼키며 유가족들과 그 지지자들을 조롱했다.

One business man in his 50s who did not want to give away his name ordered 100 pizzas for these people, saying that he would like to show support for the people from this conservative extremist group because this group continues playing the role of the center for this country. He also said that the families of the victims from the Sewol disaster did have a certain political intention to harm the country, by creating a division in the public.

자신의 이름을 밝히기를 원하지 않은 50대의 한 남성은, 지속적으로 국가의 중심으로서의 역할을 하는 것에 대해 이 극우 보수주의 단체를 지지한다고 말하며 이들을 위해 100판의 피자를 주문했다. 또 그는 세월호 참사 유가족들이 국론의 분열을 조장하며 국가에 피해를 입히려는 정치적 의도가 있다고 말했다.

However, the responses from the public were rather negative. A lot of the onlookers were very upset by the way these conservative extremists were acting towards the families of the victims. They said that the families only wished to uncover the truth behind the deaths of their loved ones and that these wishes should be respected and realized. No one should be so inhumane and unsympathetic towards their fellow human beings’ suffering. Adding that this should concern everyone because no one would want to see anything like this reoccur in the future.

하지만 대중의 반응은 오히려 부정적이었다. 구경하던 많은 이들은 이 극우보수단체가 세월호 가족들에 대해 행동하는 방식에 화를 냈다. 가족들은 사랑하는 사람들의 죽음에 대한 진실을 밝히기를 바랄 뿐이고 이 바램은 존중되고 실현되어야할 것이라고 그들은 말했다. 어느 누구도 동료 인간의 고통에 대해 그다지도 비인륜적이고 비정하게 행동해서는 안될 일이다. 또한 아무도 이런 일이 장래에 다시 일어나는 것을 보기 원하지 않으므로 이것은 모든 사람과 연관된 일이라고 이들은 덧붙였다.

Meanwhile, the members of the ‘Ilbe’ have left behind huge piles of garbage on the plaza when they finished their “excessive eating strike” in about half an hour.

한편, ‘일베’회원들은 삼십분만애 “폭식투쟁”을 마치고 광장에 산더미 같은 쓰레기를 남기고 떠났다.
