월가시위대, ‘정봉주 석방’ 성명 전문

월스트리트 점령 시위대(Occupy Wall Street)가 ‘나는 꼼수다’의 ‘언론 자유의 권리’를 위한 페이스북(☞바로가기)을 3일 개설했다. 또한 이들은 페이스북을 통해 얼마 전 구속된 정봉주 전 통합민주당 의원에 대한 석방 촉구 성명서도 발표했다.

월가 점령 시위대는 ‘OWS Defending Naneun Ggomsuda's right to Free Speech(나꼼수 표현의 자유를 위한 월스트리트 점령 시위대)’라는 이름의 페이스북을 개설해 본격적인 활동에 들어갔다.

이들은 페이스북 소개에도 “immediate release and reinstatement of Chung Bong-ju, the former South Korean lawmaker and one of the four hosts of Naneun Ggomsuda (Naggomsu)(한국의 전 국회의원이자, 전 세계에서 가장 다운로드를 많이 받는 '나는 꼼수다'(나꼼수)의 4명의 진행자들 중 한 명인 정봉주의 즉각 석방과 복권을 요구한다)”고 적어 정 전 의원의 석방과 복권을 위해 만들어진 페이지임을 밝혔다.

이들은 성명서를 통해 “우리는 한국의 전 국회의원이자, 전 세계에서 가장 다운로드를 많이 받는 '나는 꼼수다'의 4명의 진행자들 중 한 명인 정봉주의 즉각 석방과 복권을 요구한다”며 “'월스트리트 점령'과 전 세계 점령 운동은 나꼼수 탄압 사례를 널리 알리고, 한국 정부를 향한 항의를 멈추지 않을 것이다”고 밝히며 정 전 의원의 석방과 복권을 촉구했다.

다음은 이들이 남긴 성명서 전문이다.  

[OWS Defending Naneun Ggomsuda's right to Free Speech]

We demand the immediate release and reinstatement of Chung Bong-ju, the former South Korean lawmaker and one of the four hosts of Naneun Ggomsuda (“Naggomsu”), one of the world's most downloaded political podcasts on iTunes.

우리는 한국의 전 국회의원이자, 전 세계에서 가장 다운로드를 많이 받는 '나는 꼼수다'(나꼼수)의 진행자 4명 중 한 명인 정봉주씨의 즉각 석방과 복권을 요구합니다.

On December 22, South Korea's Supreme Court upheld the conviction of Mr. Chung, who was accused of defamation in 2007, when he alleged that President Lee Myung-bak, then a conservative presidential candidate, was deeply involved in a fraudulent investment scheme called BBK.

(지난해) 12월 22일 한국 대법원은 2007년 당시 보수파 대통령후보였던 이명박 대통령이 BBK라는 사기성 투자에 깊게 연루했다고 주장한 정봉주씨에게 명예훼손죄로 유죄 판결을 확정했습니다.

The BBK scandal financially ruined about 5,500 retail investors and caused two suicides. Many opposition politicians and independent journalists have alleged that President Lee was involved in the BBK fraud in 1999 to2001, before he became President. The South Korean court recently acquitted two individuals who made the same allegations. However, a Supreme Court judge--who himself barely managed legislature approval for his appointment due to his own past illicit real estate transactions--upheld a lower court's ruling that Mr. Chung's allegations were “extreme” enough to constitute defamation, whether or not Mr. Chung's claims were actually true. He is now serving a one-year prison-term and is barred from running for public office for the next ten years.

BBK 스캔들은 소규모 투자자 5500명을 파산시켰고 두 명을 자살케 만들었습니다. 많은 야당인사와 독립 언론인들은 이 대통령이, 대통령으로 취임하기 전인 1999년~2001년 동안 BBK 사기 사건에 연루되었다고 주장했습니다. 한국 법원은 최근에 이와 동일한 주장을 한 2명을 무죄 선고했습니다. 그러나 불법 부동산 거래가 문제가 되며 국회 대법관 인사청문회를 간신히 통과한 대법관 하나가 정봉주씨 주장이 명예훼손을 구성할 정도로 충분히 극단적이라는 원심을 확정했습니다. 정봉주씨의 의견이 실제로 사실이든 아니든 간에 말입니다. 정봉주씨는 현재 1년 징역형을 받았고 향후 10년 동안 피선거권을 박탈당했습니다. 

The imprisonment of Mr. Chung showcases how South Korea's judiciary and government fail the 99 percent and stifle their voice to protest. By jailing Mr. Chung on defamation charges, South Korea's 1 percent is attempting to muffle Naggomsu, or “I'm a Petty-Minded Creep”, the show which the hosts say is dedicated exclusively to “His Excellency, President Lee.” In the past eight months since April 2011 when its first episode went uploaded, Naggomsu broke many important stories about "His Excellency" and his allies. Among them was about a piece about President Lee's illegal use of government funds in buying his own retirement home in one of Seoul's most expensive residential areas.

정봉주 투옥은 한국 사법부와 정부가 어떻게 99%를 좌절시키고, 어떻게 그들의 항의 목소리를 억누르는지를 잘 보여주고 있습니다. 정봉주씨를 명예훼손죄로 감옥에 넣음으로써 한국의 1%는 진행자가 '가카 헌정 방송'이라고 일컫는 나꼼수에 재갈을 물리려 하고 있습니다. 2011년 4월 첫 회가 시작된 이후 8개월 동안 나꼼수는 '가카와 그의 친구들'에 대한 많은 이야기를 공개했습니다. 그 이야기 중에는 서울의 비싼 주거지역에 있는 사저를 구입하기 위해 정부 예산을 불법 사용했다는 것도 있습니다.

Naggomsu has an average of 10 million downloads per episode. And it has supporters on the streets, too. On November 30, when the four hosts held an outdoor “talk concert” in central Seoul, after the ruling Grand National Party pushed through a controversial free trade treaty with the U.S., it brought about 100 thousand supporters onto the streets.

나꼼수는 회당 1000만 번의 다운로드를 기록하고 있습니다. 또한 거리에도 지지자들이 있습니다. 집권 한나라당이 논란이 됐던 한미 자유무역 협정을 통과시킨 후, 그들의 옥외 토크콘서트(11월 30일)에는 10만 명이 운집했습니다.

South Korea's 1 percent fears Naggomsu because the podcast invigorates the political energy of the people from all walks of life and mobilizes them peacefully against their corrupt political and economic agenda.

한국의 1%는 나꼼수를 두려워합니다. 이 팟캐스트가 모든 사람들의 정치적 에너지를 활성화하고, 이들이 1%의 부패한 정치적·경제적 어젠다에 반대하기 위해 사람들을 평화롭게 동원하기 때문입니다. 

An attack on Naggomsu is an attack on Free Speech and the Occupy movement across the globe. On December 5, the three hosts of the show, except Mr. Chung who could not leave South Korea because his passport was denied, visited OWS (http://www.nycga.net/events/event/im-a-petty-minded-creep/). We agreed that our movements are in “the same context” and decided to seek strategic alliances. From Manhattan to Moscow, the global Occupy movement understands the importance of social networks. SNS did not directly cause our movement but helps us organize more effectively. The ways Naggomsu uses SNS to spread its cause and raise funds inspire us.

나꼼수에 대한 공격은 표현의 자유에 대한 공격이자, 전 세계 점령(Occupy) 운동에 대한 공격입니다. 12월 5일 여권을 받을 수 없었던 정봉주씨를 제외한 3명의 진행자가 '월스트리트 점령'을 방문했습니다.(http://www.nycga.net/events/event/im-a-petty-minded-creep/). 그 자리에서 우리는 우리의 운동이 같은 맥락에 있다는 것을 동의했고, 전략적 제휴를 모색하기로 합의했습니다. 맨해튼에서 모스크바에 이르기까지, 전 세계 점령 운동은 소셜네트워크의 중요성을 알고 있습니다. SNS가 우리 운동을 직접 야기하지는 않았으나, 우리가 효과적으로 조직할 수 있도록 도와주고 있습니다. 나꼼수가 그들의 대의를 퍼뜨리고, 자금을 조성하는 데 SNS를 사용하는 방식은 우리에게 많은 영감을 주고 있습니다.

Mr. Chung has exhausted all legal options to bring back his freedom. He can be freed and reinstated only via a presidential pardon. South Korean President Lee Myung-bak should release him immediately in the name of democracy if his country claims to be a democracy serving the 99 percent. Until Mr. Chung is freed, OWS and its global movement will not stop spreading the word about Naggomsu and protesting the South Korean government.

정봉주씨는 석방에 쓸 수 있는 모든 합법적 방법을 다 썼습니다. 오직 대통령 사면을 통해서만 그가 석방될 수 있습니다. 한국이 99%를 섬기는 민주주의 국가라고 주장한다면, 이명박 대통령은 민주주의의 이름으로 정봉주를 즉각 석방해야 합니다. 정봉주씨가 석방될 때까지, '월스트리트 점령'과 전 세계 점령 운동은 나꼼수 탄압 사례를 널리 알리고, 한국 정부를 향한 항의를 멈추지 않을 것입니다.
